Flatting Assignment

Novel Study

This is one of the activities that I choose to do for my novel study.

Questioning and predicting

How long did it take for you to create the rocket? I think it would have taken a while because when he got to SHARF he was still glueing together the last pieces of his rocket.
How many attempts did it take to get the idea right? I predict that it would have taken a while because he would need a lot of power for his rocket to never come down.
Did you ever think twice about going to SHARF alone? I think it would be a yes because when he got to the train station he kept on thinking about his Mum and what she would be doing at that moment.
How did you feel when your rocket failed to go even 100 metres?I think he would have felt quite sad because he spent ages trying to get it right.

Pick a path

Cross Country

On Tuesday we had our school Cross Country. We had to run 2.7km as fast as we could. Crossing bridges, running by a creak and cutting roads was what made the run more enjoyable for me because at primary school I was used to just running around a field. After a few minutes, people started finishing. I bet my goal, which was to come in the top 3, by coming 2nd. I loved running the course and I can't wait for next year! Here are some pictures of me in action!!

Narative

The Figure
By Sofia Lumbreras

7:30am, “time to get ready for school,” I mumbled to myself. Carefully I rolled out of bed, drew the curtains and peered out the window. “Where am I?” I was sure I didn’t fall asleep here. Curious and scared to find out where I was, I stumbled down the unexpected stairs that were in my path. “Hello,” my voice echoed as I carried on heading towards what I thought was the kitchen. No reply. “Hello” I said again, hoping for an answer. Again, no reply. I wandered into a room, it was pitch black, the door was ajar but, I could just make out the figure of a human.

“Who’s in there?” My voice echoed in the room. Thoughts spun around in my head, and I felt as though I was on a ferris wheel.
“Gosh, children these days, they just don’t knock” I heard the figure mumble.
“Who are you, and why am I here?” I was still inquiring the fact that this is not my home.
“This is your new home.”
“What happened? Where are my parents?”
The figure didn't say anything but I think I saw a smile emerge on their face.
“What did you do?” I exclaimed “ I know you did something”

As soon as the figure revealed his face I turned around and ran. Banging my fists hard on the rotted wood, that made the door, didn’t do anything . I was locked inside.
“Haha, you thought you could escape, but that is not how I roll.” “I kidnap kids and them lock them up inside my attic, which is where you will be going right now.”
Giving me no time to escape, the man then grabbed me by the collar and dragged me up the stairs into the attic. Inside the attic it was damp, dusty and you could barely see what was meant to be the floor. Within a second I found myself locked up in a room with a girl who goes by the name Lucy.

She says that she has had no food whatsoever for the last two days and I believe her because it looks like she is just made out of skin and bones, no meat at all. “ How long have you been down here for?” I asked her.
“A week” she said with her squeaky voice.
“Poor you, I only got here today, just before to be exact.”
“There are heaps of other kids down there,” Lucy said pointing at a set of doors. “ Lucifer has kept them for half a year now and they are starving.
“Who’s Lucifer?” I questioned.
“Lucifer is the guy who lives here, they guy who kidnapped you in the first……..”

“Help!!” A scream from one of the doors stopped Lucy from finishing her sentence.  We rush over to the door. It is locked. “We need a key,” I say to Lucy.
“Look, over there” Lucy squealed in her high pitched voice. “ I think that’s a key.”
“Let’s get it before Lucifer catches us again”.
We grabbed the key and tried using it for the door we that we heard the shout from. It didn’t budge. “I think we got the wrong key” I exclaim. “There is another door over there, maybe the key unlocks that door.”
“It’s worth a try” Lucy pleaded. “I hope this works”
It did. The key fit perfectly inside the keyhole and as soon as I turned it, the door squeaked open. You wouldn’t believe what we saw inside. Inside the room 1000 keys shimmered in the sunlight. “ I’m sure one of these will unlock the door,” Lucy says, happy to have found a solution.

We started to walk down the long, dark hallway to get to the doors.
“Over there” I say, running towards a huge brown  door. “This is the one”

The door jolted open and there were the children that had been screaming for who knows how long. I noticed a window that Lucifer must have opened and we all rushed towards it. One by one we clambered out and onto the dry, bare grass below us. “Run” I screamed as I saw Lucifer appear at the window. Glass shattered behind us as Lucifer smashed through it, but that didn’t stop us. We kept running until he was out of sight. “ That was a close one” I said with a sigh of relief.

Probability Snail Race

Today in maths we played a probability game called snail race. It is basically a game where you roll 2 dice and add the total of the 2 numbers, then move that number snail. There are 12 snails needed in the game. The results of my game were the following.
Game 1:          Game 2:
1. 10                1. 7
2. 7                  2. 9
3. 6                  3. 3

My group kept on rolling 7's and I think the reason for that is because 7 has more combinations that you use to create the number, than other numbers. 1 was never rolled once because it can only be made by 1 and 0 but there is no 0 on a dice. If you were to play this game I would recommend you have snail 7 because you can roll them using many different number combinations.

Yoga

Yesterday Room 20 was invited to join a Yoga class. We had to imagine that we were in the jungle,on an adventure. We learnt some yoga poses that represent the animals that we met on our jungle journey. Also we had to row boats and pitch tents, using the Yoga poses as a guide. Pictured below are some photos that were taken of us when we were in our Yoga poses.

Mandarin

Last week during our Mandarin lesson we learnt how to say where we come from. Today in Mandarin we were learning how to say the members of our family's names. We had to design and create our family tree using Mandarin names only. Pictured below is a family tree made with all the new names we learnt. Also the bottom picture is my family tree. I hope you enjoy.

Number 1 pet

Last week we learnt how structure a piece of persuasive writing. In small groups we created a persuasive piece of writing about an animal. We had to come up with a intro, a few reasons and a conclusion to back up why we think our animal is the best. My group's animal was the skunk. I hope you enjoy it.

Decimals

In class we have been learning how to order decimals up to 3 decimal place and put them on a number line. Hannah, Giselle and I made a number line from 0-2 and we placed fractions, decimals, pictures and percentages onto the number line accurately. We also attended a workshop and revised our minds on how to place decimals in order on a number line. The most important thing that I took away from the workshop is that you have to put 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 etc on the number line before you start placing the numbers on to the number line. Overall I think we did really well.

Wearable art

This is our finished design. It is called Night delight. The creators of it were Sofia.L, Sofia.V, Taylor and Zoe. The black represents the night sky and the stars resemble the seven stars of Matariki. We also weaved a headpiece out of flax and made clay models of food to go in our basket. The basket that Zoe and her Nan made was weaved out flax. It took a lot of hard work and spare time. I think we  worked very well together because while one of us was painting the dress the others were working on something else like; weaving the headpiece, moulding clay etc. I hope you enjoy it.

Picasso Art

Picasso Art

Lately we have been creating some Picasso style art. If you didnt know, Pablo Picasso was a famous artist that was well known for his amazing, different style of art. He was born on the 25th of October 1881 in Spain and died on the 8th of April 1973 in France. To create our art we had to firstly draw the shape we wanted our head to be and we drew the outline of our hair. Next we drew our eyes, nose, mouth and any other accessories we wanted. Then we coloured them all in with bright or dark colours, leaving the background white. Lastly we coloured the background in with a contrasting colour that made our art stand out, we glued on our features and we were done.

Here is a picture of my art:

Revolution Tour

Today Revolution came to school. Blake performed outstanding freestyling raps. He shared his life story with us and the main message I took away from him is that everyone has a value. Also he told us to say to the person next to us " I see it in you my friend" He believes that if you believe in yourself you can make a change. You can find a value in each other and you can find the value in yourself. It was amazing.

Here are some links to his raps

Mother's Day Poem

My Mum

Her wide smile lights up my day, like the sunrise
crystal clear, blue eyes, shimmering like the sea and a beautiful summer's day
Her Silky, conditioned, blonde hair flies in the breeze, like an autumn tree
That's my mum
Soft, moisturised hands grasping mine, fingers locked together
Her tough feet, really tired after a long walk
Smooth, blushed cheeks, as soft as a feather
That’s my mum
Beautiful scents of incense and candles fill our house
nice aroma of fresh soap, after she showers
The smell of chocolate is mouth watering, as she polishes off a block in record time
That’s my mum
The gentle sound of her voice singing sends shivers down my spine
She gives me Encouraging and supportive  shouts as I run
Talking is one of her specialties, causing her to take ages in the supermarket
And that’s my mum

Sophie Pascoe- Information Report

Sophie Pascoe

Sophie Pascoe is an inspirational, paralympic swimming champion from New Zealand. She has won many medals over her time, being a swimmer, and is expected to win lots more.
Background:

Sophie was born on the 8th of January 1993 in Christchurch. She has one sister called Rebecca, a mum called Jo and a Dad called Garry. The name of the swim club she swims at  is the QEII swim club. Swimming has been her passion ever since she was about 5 years old.

Accident:

When she was two, her Dad ran her over ( by accident) with his ride on mower. This tragic event left Sophie with a rounded stump just below her left knee. She still says to this day, that the accident has been the best thing that has ever happened to her. Her Dad is still haunted by the event, as he feels he is the one responsible for the amputation.

Inspiration:

If her left leg hadn’t been amputated below the knee she would not have been inspired by her  struggles against able-bodied rivals in the swimming pool.  Another thing is that  she re-opened Harewood school swimming pool.  She has inspired other disabled athletes because she has shown them that obstacles in life don’t define who you are. Also  she has shown that even if you have a disability, it doesn’t mean you can’t do something you have always dreamed of doing. She has shared inspirational speeches at different schools.

Awards:

Sophie has won many awards including gold, silver and bronze medals in the paralympics, Many halberg awards and that is not even half of them. Some of sophie’s main achievements would have to be  Winner of the Halberg Award for Disabled Sportsperson of the Year 3 times. Lastly she got named as an  ambassador for beef and lamb New Zealand.

Overall Sophie Pascoe is an amazing, inspirational hero that many young athletes overcoming challenges look up to.

Goals

GOALS!!!!!

Last term my goals were to......

To get my sport and cultural gold by the end of the year and to get more confident with my decimals and percentages.

So far, I have......

Improved in my decimals and I am a little more confident with my percentages. I haven't got my golds yet, but I have already got 10 points towards my sports gold, meaning I only have 10 more points to achieve it.

This term my smart goals are.......

To get my sport and cultural gold by the end of the year and to get 80% or more in stage seven.

I am going to achieve these by.......

Joining lots of activities and practising my maths every night. Also I need to mainly focus on practising in the areas that I need to work on.
